"I am really sorry...I need to get out of here! I will call you again and we can make a proper arrangement to meet and talk thoroughly about this. Right now I just want to go home."
Madifako was torn between Maggy and Motlatjo because her best friend was in the bedroom screaming at someone on her phone whilst her client was crying and struggling dismally to compose herself. Madifako decided to release Maggy and focus on her best friend.
As Madifako walked into her bedroom where Motlatjo was now swearing into the handset speaker telling whomever on the end of the line to tell his wife to stay the hell away from her before she does something she is going to regret...Madifako only assumed that it was Maanda and she walked out of the bedroom nauseous at the thought of him.
Motlatjo joined Madifako in her kitchen and it was only then that Madifako noticed the horribly swollen blue-black and red left eye that Motlatjo had. "Oh my friend, you need to see the doctor, that eye does not look right."
"To hell with that I am going to my house to meet Maanda to give him a piece of my mind. He will have to take me to the doctor; I will see you later Fako...and I am sorry for everything!" Motlatjo drove off like a maniac leaving Madifako in a mess of a house with remnants of a complicated story. Her small coffee table was broken and there was broken glass on the floor as well which she had to move furniture to clean up. The house looked a mess and Madifako swallowed the lump in her throat which promised a flood of tears that she was not ready to release because crying was clearly becoming a norm.
After the mini Spring-Cleaning Madifako thought to check up on Motlatjo and gave her a call. The phone did not ring more than twice and a sobbing voice answered the phone.
"Chomi..."
"Motlatjo, ke eng? (What is it?)
"Madifako I really cannot do this anymore. Maanda is going to call you shortly because there is clearly something you two must talk about."
"Motlatjo, what are you saying? You are confusing me. Maanda and I have nothing to talk about. Can you just tell me what's going on please"
Motlatjo hung up without responding to Madifako's plea and as if on cue Maanda Mudau called.
"What is it?"
"Madifako please don't hang up...I need to talk to you."
"Maanda, I seriously have nothing to say to you because all you have brought to my life is havoc."
"I know but the problem I have now is that I am hopelessly in love with you and have decided that you are the one I want to be with. I should have handled the situation better but I realize that there is no time like the present. I have ended things with Motlatjo and for the first time in years I was blatantly honest with my wife and told her that I want you. I completely understand if you want nothing to do with me but you have inspired me to do things right. I will wait for you Madifako...I will wait!"
Madifako could not take it anymore and she hung up.

A Love Nest In Limpopo (12)
Motlatjo fell onto the couch and turned pale. “Madifako,
Maanda is that guy I was secretly seeing and was not able to tell you who he is
because he is married. Maanda ke motho waka mokgotse.” (Maanda is my boyfriend friend)
Madifako could not believe what her best friend has just
said. They both sat next to each other staring at the television but seeing
nothing. Motlatjo put her hand on Madifako’s thigh and said, “My friend, you
need to go and see a doctor because the last time I was with Maanda I got a
vaginal reaction which forced me to see Dr. McNeal the gynecologist and I await
my results because we suspected a serious STD.”
“What? Why did you never tell me this?”
“I was embarrassed my friend and I did not know that you
were also involved with my man.”
“I am not involved with that sick man, I got caught up by
emotion and got drunk and lost all logic. I feel sick!” Madifako dashed to the
toilet and threw up. She could not believe what was happening. When she got out
Motlatjo had returned to the house from her car to collect 2 bottles of wine…they
both needed it! The girls sat on the floor and drowned their sorrows in wine
whilst sharing stories they should have shared way before tonight. They cried
and cursed and laughed and cried some more.
“Have you taken a pregnancy test Madifako?”
“Not yet. The reason I called you was to tell you about this
and for you to be here with me when I take the test. I have it now.”
“So what are you waiting for?”
“Morning…”
“It’s 2am that’s morning enough in my books go take that
pee!”
Madifako took the pregnancy test and it came out negative.
Relief never felt that good and she was grateful that she was not pregnant. Her
concern now was Motlatjo’s results which meant that she had another issue to
worry about. “How did we get here Motlatjo?”
“Well, when Maanda asked me for my friends’ numbers to try
and recruit them to sell Forever Living products I did not think that part of
his recruitment meant sleeping with my friends. I am upset with him my friend, I
just want to call that stupid fool and give him a piece of my mind.”
“No don’t…just walk away from him and forget that he even
existed.”
“I wish it was that easy because I love him Fako.” Motlatjo
broke into tears and cried with her head on Madifako’s lap until they both
passed out! The alarm went off at 08:00 reminding Madifako of her first
appointment at 09:00. She hurried to the bedroom and started getting ready for
her client. She woke Motlatjo up, who seemed to be carrying two heads as she
could not get up from the floor. “Yohhh mokgotse ke sa tagilwe. Ke nako mang? (My friend I am still drunk. What time is it?)
“Quarter past 8 and I have a client coming at 09:00. Let me
jump into the shower.”
“Ok, I will not be going into the office feeling like this.
Let me call my boss and excuse myself.” Madifako jumped into the shower and got
ready for her client. Motlatjo went to the kitchen to prepare a concoction that
will help with the hangover they both were probably feeling. As she was busy in
the kitchen there was a knock on Madifako’s door and Madifako shouted from her
bedroom for Motlatjo to ‘get the door please.’
When Motlatjo opened the door, her heart stopped beating for
a moment as she stood face to face with the woman who has threatened her before
to stay out of her way. Maggy Mudau could not believe her eyes either because
Motlatjo was the last woman she expected to find in a space she considered
therapeutic. Maggy saw RED and all the anger she ever felt in the 15 years of her
unhappy marriage with Maanda came gushing back to life and Maggy lost it.
Without even saying anything to Motlatjo she lunged into the house fist first
which landed on Motlatjo’s left eye and all hell broke loose. Motlatjo and
Maggy had a piece of each other for what felt like hours until Madifako came
running into the lounge shocked at the chaos that was in her house with her
best friend on top of her client exchanging blows. Madifako managed to get
between the ladies and asked: “Ladies!!! What the hell? Stop it before I call
the police on both of you. Motlatjo what is going on here?”
“Well, you should be asking this bitch who just started
attacking me for nothing.”
Maggy was hyper ventilating with her eyes locked onto
Motlatjo and said, “Madifako, I am sorry for this and I am not attacking this
whore for nothing but this woman has given me grief in my marriage for some
time now.” Madifako’s worst nightmare was unfolding right before her eyes in
her lounge. The suspicion that Maggy Mudau could be Maanda’s wife was confirmed
but the problem was that she was attacking her best friend not knowing that she
too should be getting a piece of this violent pie.
Madifako asked Motlatjo to go to the bedroom so that she
could have a word with her client. Motlatjo obliged cursing at the top of her
voice while Maggy was trying to put her arm back into what has suddenly become
a sleeveless dress which was torn by Motlatjo. Madifako asked Maggy to sit down
and went to the kitchen to get her a glass of water. Maggy sat down and as she
looked at Madifako tears gathered in her eyes and cried as she was apologizing profusely.
“Madifako I am so sorry…I don’t know what came over me. When
I saw that bitch…”
“Uhm that bitch is a friend of mine and I don’t appreciate
you coming into my house and wreaking the havoc that you did in my space.”
“I am really sorry…I need to get out of here! I will call
you again and we can make a proper arrangement to meet and talk thoroughly
about this. Right now I just want to go home.”

A Love Nest in Limpopo (11)
As he drove out and she waved him goodbye at the door her cellphone notified her of an email and it was Maggy Mudau acknowledging the receipt of the quotation and securing her next appointment for tomorrow. She wished she could decline that appointment but couldn't...she needed to decipher who this woman is and what her mission was...Madifako ran a bath, soaked herself and got ready to visit some of her clients at their homes.
After several house calls for the day Madifako passed by Clicks Cycad and bought Clear Blue pregnancy test that she once saw advertised on television with a special feature of estimating the duration of the pregnancy (She also secretly wished it could tell who the father is...) She was suddenly feeling sick, cramps in her stomach, nipples sensitive and a bit nauseous...all signs of pregnancy. She dreaded taking the test but when she got home she read the leaflet in the pregnancy test box which advised the best time to take the test would be with the first urine of the day first thing in the morning. She opted to wait for tomorrow morning and she snuggled in her bed and played some music then she dosed off and slept for the remainder of the afternoon into the night.
Madifako was woken from her sleep by a phone call from Motlatjo.
"Mokgotse ke bona gore o lekile go nleletja mogala" (Friend, I see that you tried to call me)
"Yes I did, I need you!"
"Ok I am leaving Meropa Casino from the comedy show, I will pass by your house now on my way home."
"Sharp"
Madifako checked the time, it was 10pm and she got out of the bed headed to her lounge and watched some television whilst waiting for Motlatjo. Motlatjo did not take long to get to Madifako's house. She walked in singing at the top of her voice and excited to see her friend.
"Ke eng chomi? (What's wrong friend?) Why do you look like you have seen a ghost?"
"Eish my friend I am in a mess of a situation."
"Talk to me darling, you know I am the fixer."
"I don't even know where to start. Trevor asked me to marry him."
Motlatjo jumped up and down ululating and broke into a wedding song...
"No wait Motlatjo there's more. The day before Trevor proposed I was with another man."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, I slept with another man...worse of it all, without a condom."
"What? Who is this man? Do I know him?"
"I don't think you know him. His name is Maanda."
Motlatjo's eyes widened and she asked, "He is not Maanda Mudau right?"
"Oh Motlatjo his name IS Maanda Mudau."
Motlatjo fell onto the couch and turned pale. "Madifako, Maanda is that guy I was secretly seeing and was not able to tell you who he is because he is married. Maanda ke motho waka mokgotse."(Maanda is my boyfriend friend.)

A Love Nest In Limpopo (10)
Madifako hung up and only got to take a good look at her call log and was thrown off when she noticed that Maanda had called her almost 10 times after she ignored his call and had sent tons more messages on WhatsApp; but what freaked her out most was the picture Maanda sent of himself with Madifako sleeping in bed captioned, "You are all I need."
There was something sickening about that caption. Madifako felt a heavy cloud gather around her. For the first time she allowed herself to listen to the instinct that is informing her that Maanda is a bomb ready to explode and she needed to do all she can to put out that fire. She needed Motlatjo, a friend she had, ever since she could remember. Motlatjo always knew how to deal with a tyrant of a man. Madifako hurriedly dialled Motlatjo and "You have reached the voicemail service of 079 64..." and hung up.
Suddenly Trevor walked out of the bathroom stark naked in all shapes and sizes and Madifako salivated and yearned for that comfort that Trevor seems to manage especially at times like these when she felt conflicted, but yet again Maanda popped back up and killed that trail of thought. She also allowed herself to remember that she has not taken a pregnancy nor HIV test and that gave her cramps in her stomach. First thing in the morning she will need to go to Clicks Cycad and get herself checked out.
Trevor then said, "Baby, I know this is not the most comfortable of conversations to have but Mbali will be here over the weekend and this is one of the things that I feel we need to get over before we get into the lobola negotiations...I want to build our love nest on a clean slate. Please accompany me?!" Madifako's heavy cloud became dark at the thought of her inability to talk to Trevor about Maanda. He would not go ahead with the negotiations and there is no way that Madifako was missing yet another opportunity to walk down the isle.
Madifako then agreed to go with Trevor and he plunged his manly self on top of her and passionately kissed her until all her resistance crumbled. As soon as Trevor rose to the occasion he quickly restrained himself, got dressed and rushed out to Ladanna to fetch his clothes because it was clear he was moving back in. As he drove out and she waved him goodbye at the door her cellphone notified her of an email and it was Maggy Mudau acknowledging the receipt of the quotation and securing her next appointment for tomorrow. A Love Nest in Limpopo (9)
"Actually, I have a suggestion...can we park the idea of making love until this process is done; create a semi-virgin out of you?" Madifako welcomed that suggestion with open arms as she needed to rid herself of Maanda Mudau's demons.
Trevor kissed Madifako on her forehead and asked to be excused to go make a call to his uncle to tell him the good news. He left the room and Madifako was left still swimming in her guilty thoughts of Maanda Mudau. Somehow the way she is feeling is not the way she expected to feel after a marriage proposal...She did a quick inventory of the situation and realised that:
1. She is getting married to a man 8 years her junior
2. That man is expecting a child with someone else
3. She has recently slept with a man she hardly knows
4. She has 3 kids that belong to 2 other men
5. She was just not sure about all that was happening to her...
Her phone rang and it was Maanda. "What does he want?" thought Madifako. She ignored that call, put the phone on silent and shoved it under her pillow.
"What's wrong angel?" asked Trevor as her hopped onto the bed smiling at his wife-to-be.
"Nothing why?" she said.
"You have this annoyed look on your face, o sharp?"
"I am okay thanks...what is your uncle saying?"
"He is so excited love. He actually made me laugh and said he was about to call me to ask me when I intend to settle down; so rest assured the Mkhabela's are more than happy that this is happening. One thing he told me though is that traditionally he will need your family's postal address so that my family can send an official letter to your family requesting an appointment."
"Oh ok..."
"Oh ok? Girl, give me that postal address. I need to send it to my uncle now. Why do you seem offish?"
"I am not offish Trev...maybe just a little overwhelmed realising that it's happening."
"Yes baby, it's happening you are soon going to be Mrs Madifako Beverly Mkhabela."
Trevor whistled into the bathroom and ran a shower. Madifako took the tray into the kitchen, did the dishes and got back to the bedroom to make the bed and as she took the phone from under the pillow, it rang again...It was Maanda.
"What do you want?", whispered Madifako
"Baby, I need to see you. I have not stopped thinking about you since day before yesterday. Time with you has made me realise what I have been missing in life and baby you are it. Please Madifako...I am begging you!"
"Maanda, I have nothing to say to you and please stop calling me." A Love Nest in Limpopo (8)
As he carried Madifako into the house he undressed her and got her into her pyjamas and tucked her in bed; and as he was about to leave, Madifako called out to Trevor and asked him to come sleep next to her and just hold her...Trevor obliged.
When morning broke, Madifako awoke in confusion yet again feeling herself in a man's arms in her bed...It was after a recollection of last night that she remembered that Trevor picked her up from Cubana and probably stayed overnight with her. As she turned over to face Trevor he was wide awake and gave her a smile and said, "Good morning angel."
"Good morning Trev..." AND as if nothing had happened between them they embraced and held onto each other as though they were the last people remaining in the world for one another.
After some time Trevor jumped out of bed and returned to the bedroom with a tray carrying a plate of an omelette, a slice of bread coupled with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice; finished with a long stemmed red rose which has always been Trevor's way of reminding Madifako that he loves her very much. He hadn't served her breakfast in bed in a very long time and this time it literally melted Madifako's heart and she fell instantaneously back in love with Trevor all over again.
"Madifako, we need to talk"
"Yes we do..."
"Look, I don't know what you have been getting up to this past week and I don't care but all I know is that I have wronged the one woman who means the world to me and I am very afraid of losing her." Trevor was saying this with his voice shaky and eyes glistening with tears and all Madifako could do was replay the moment she had with Maanda Mudau and was trying very hard not to expose the guilt that was gripping her yet again. Trevor continued, "Madifako, I know the last time we spoke you wanted to know when I was going to marry you and it had to take Mbali telling me that she is pregnant that I realised that I don't want to be with anyone but you. You have been nothing but a good woman to me and you have been so honest with me that I cannot afford to lose that. So having said that Madifako, it would be an honour to have you agree to be my wife and allow me to love you for as long as I breathe?!"
"Trevor, you are expecting a child with someone else; how can...?"
"Shhh, I know. I am prepared to take responsibility of my actions but I am not prepared to lose you. I know this has hurt you but I will make it a point to heal that pain for the rest of my life as my wife...please say yes and let's do this right...as husband and wife."
"YES TREVOR!"
Mr Trevor Vulani Mkhabela was elated and suddenly looked so mature and ready to be the head of Madifako's house. He stood up chest out and pranced around the bedroom showing Madifako how he is now going to be talking with his left hand in everyone's face because of the ring he will be donning as a married man and all Madifako could do was laugh and laugh and laugh some more. Trevor then said, "Baby, I am going to speak to my uncle and get this ball rolling today! I no longer have time to waste time. Actually, I have a suggestion...can we park the idea of making love until this process is done; create a semi-virgin out of you?" Madifako welcomed that suggestion with open arms as she needed to rid herself of Maanda Mudau's demons.

A love nest in Limpopo (7)
As Madifako was preparing Maggie's quotation she asked for
her full names. "I am Maggy with a 'y' and because o moPedi, I know that
my surname is simple yet always misspelt so I will spell it...M...U (not
O)...D...A...U! Maggy Mudau!
Madifako drank herself to a pulp and went straight for her phone and drunk-dialled Trevor.
"Hello"
"Hi Trevor, I know things are weird between us right now but can you come pick me up from Cubana? I cannot drive in the state I am in.
Without thinking twice Trevor called Jeremy the Maxi Taxi driver to pick him up from Ladanna to fetch his woman. In no time Trevor walked into the restaurant like a hero to save his damsel in clear distress.
As he carried Madifako into the house he undressed her and got her into her pyjamas and tucked her in bed; and as he was about to leave, Madifako called out to Trevor and asked him to come sleep next to her and just hold her...Trevor obliged.
That last name sent shivers down Madifako’s spine
considering that she has just spent a haphazard night with a Maanda Mudau.
Suddenly she was overwhelmed by Maggy’s presence and all sorts of thoughts ran
through her mind. ‘Is this Maanda’s WIFE?’ ‘Could this woman be here to check
me out?’ ‘Is she testing waters?’ ‘Should I run for my life?’ And as the
thoughts were pouring one after the other, Maggy put her hand on Madifako’s
shoulder to ask if she was okay?
Madifako almost jumped out of her skin with fear and Maggy
noticed that she was shook. “Madifako, are you fine?”
“Uhm, yes yes..I am okay, sorry just got distracted there
for a minute. I have just remembered that I have another appointment. I almost
forgot about it.” Maggy said, “Oh sorry honey bunch we did take longer than
expected let me dash I’ve also got a hair appointment with Malik and I must tell you how meticulous he gets with time. Send me the quote via email mudaum@gmail.com …very easy to remember.”
She said this as she was grabbing her handbag, car keys and heading for the
door.
Madifako almost struggled to stand up to walk her client out
as she suddenly became disoriented wishing to ask Maggy if she knew Maanda
Mudau? Madifako stood at the door waved back at Maggy as she drove towards the
gate in her SUV. As the gate closed behind Maggy all Madifako could do was
untie everything…first the jacket needed to get off; the tie undone and skirt
loosened…she needed to breathe.
This was not how she expected her day to pen out. She went
straight for the whisky bottle, poured a tot into a fresh glass and took a gulp
to shake herself back to life. Maggy’s scent lingered in Madifako’s studio and
she needed to get out of there and go for a drive. Madifako went to Cubana at Platinum Park and ordered an entire bottle of wine for herself. There was something unsettling about Maggy Mudau, her consultation felt too coincidental.
