The moment her front door closed behind the shameful Trevor, her knees gave in and she plummeted to the floor and wept. Madifako cried for what felt like years replaying the number of times she had put her needs last to accommodate Trevor and his bullshit.
"...better the devil you know...is a pile of hogwash", she thought. "Can I not fall in love with the devil period?!"
Just at that moment in thought, her phone rang and a warm feeling came gushing from Lord-knows-where because she knows this unsaved number calling and she sat up, gathered strength to sound chirpy and answered the phone.
"Madifako good day."
"Good day my lady, how do you do?" Madifako did not know what that baritone did to her system but what was fluttering in her stomach were not butterflies...she had doves in there. It was Maanda Mudau, a man she has never laid eyes on but found thoroughly exciting just from the sound of his voice. Maanda has been trying to recruit Madifako to join Forever Living, in search of economic emancipation. Maanda got Madifako's number from a mutual friend.
"I hope you don't think I am stalking you," he said, "I seem to be struggling to ignore the wish to meet you. Are you free for dinner tonight?" Madifako, didn't whinge...the thought of being alone tonight was scary. She said, "Oh Maanda, you are in luck. I could do with an outing tonight. Time and place?"
"18:30 Saskia Restaurant?"
"See you there"
"Later then..."
"Sure thing, good bye." Madifako took a quick look at her wrist watch it was 14:30 and she dashed to the bathroom because she only had 4 hours to get ready. Hair-shampooed and conditioned, face-masked and exfoliated, armpits and v-jay-jay-shaved and trimmed and legs self waxed and very smooth. It was then 15:45 and the big question was 'What to wear?'
After emptying her closet with clothes in every corner of her room she finally settled for an off-shoulder black knee length pencil dress which accentuated her African figure, with a pair of diamonds and pearls earrings coupled with a gorgeous necklace and a set of matching traditional Venda cloth clutch bag and stilettos she thought that would put a nice touch to things. Madifako left Bendor Park at 18:00 with no intention of being late for dinner.
Upon arrival she realised that she has no way of identifying him as she has not met him. As she waltzed into the restaurant, she was pleasantly welcomed by one of the waitrons who politely asked if she is alone or joining someone.
"I am joining someone, but between you and me, I have no idea what he looks like." The waiter and Madifako giggled a bit and the waiter said, "There's only two gentlemen in the restaurant sitting alone, I could find him for you..."
"Yes please," as she snuck into the ladies' to check her matte lipstick one last time. Just as she took a glimpse in the mirror, she remembered Trevor and automatically walked to the toilet and flushed without using it...that flushing sound was so symbolic and therapeutic at that moment because it felt as if she was flushing out that thought from her system and moving right along.
As she reappeared in the reception area the waiter had a big smile on his face and said, "If you are Madifako please follow me."
The moment Maanda saw her with the waiter he stood up as Madifako approached the table. "What a fine piece of work Mr Mudau is?" she thought.
"Heaven must be missing an angel," Maanda said, and Madifako outspoken and witty as she always was, today was gobsmacked and all she could do was smile and not know where to look because Maanda was gorgeous to look at. He was clearly a local Uncle Bae with a dash of grey here and there, a body to die for and height that forced her to face the sky just to look at him, an entire TDV (Tall Dark & Venda).
"How are you Madifako?" He was saying this with his arms wide open for a hug which Madifako was pulled into and she held on for dear life and though it lasted a couple of seconds it felt like a lifetime, he smelt like a dream and she didn't want to let go...but had to!
"I am alright Maanda and how are You?"
"Standing in front of You? I am fantastic!"
As Madifako was ready to sit down, Maanda asked her not to as he was still admiring her look.
"Zwithu zwa vhukuma wee!"(Beautiful things)...and all Madifako could do after hearing him say that was giggle like a teenager, she couldn't believe her own behaviour herself. Maanda seemed to have her in the palm of his hand and could do whatever he wants with her. As they sat down all the both of them could do was look into each other's eyes and laughed with amusement at the chemistry that was so clearly present.
